Derek Smith is a three-decade veteran of the construction and real estate development community. Mr. Smith is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford University with degrees in both mechanical (bachelor of science) and civil engineering (master of science), respectively.
Through Marinship Development Interest, Mr. Smith leveraged his technical expertise and governmental competencies to successfully advocate for multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects, generating employment opportunities across the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. He has been a driving force behind thousands of new housing units at Mission Bay and the Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard.
In addition to technical expertise, successful developments require sophisticated political engagement. Mr. Smith has extensive experience working with and regularly appearing before the San Francisco Mayor’s Office, Board of Supervisors, Public Utilities Commission, Planning Commission, former Redevelopment Agency Commission and other governmental bodies with jurisdiction over economic and workforce development policy, regulation, administrative actions, and construction projects.
